Why Group Counselling Works

Validity of Group Counselling

Groups foster development of interpersonal and intrapersonal development, prompting positive change and promote healing (Coery et al., 2018).

1.

Group fosters the “opportunity provide members with a place to give and receive feedback, to gain insight into their interpersonal dynamics, and to address old wounds and unfinished business in their lives” (Coerey et al., 2018, p. 3).

2.

Expand opportunities to build inclusion, building a sense of belonging Group process invites formulation of a powerful force, where members can challenge social discourses, and open doors to experience growth, freedom, and personal autonomy (Drumm, 2000).

3.

Increase members sense of belonging, connection to others, inclusion, and personal competency in an environment that is grounded in respect and trust (Corey et al., 2018: Drumm, 2000)

4.

Allowing the reality of “truth and conflicts are brought to the surface and participants are guided to examine and grapple with all of the positions and options involved” (Drumm, 2000, p. 20).

5.

Opportunities to develop mutual aid, support, and validation for the unique experience and voice of each member. Interactions within group, a sense of “fullness of empathetic understanding…could not be matched in individual sessions” (Drumm, 2000, p. 28).

6.

Shapes complex experiences of new learning, where members are invented to authentically reflect on relation style, inviting development of interpersonal functioning (Hannah, 2000).

7.

Fosters opportunities to deepen one’s sense of empathy with others within a safe and trusting relationship (Berg, Landreth, & Fall, 2006). (Drumm, 2006; Hannah, 2000) as compared to individual counselling (Drumm, 2006).

There Is Magic in Groups

I was drawn to Drumm (2016) presentation of the majestic nature fostered within groups. This inspired me to reconsider my own beliefs of the efficacy of group as compared to individual therapy. Groups generate unique opportunities to facilitate increased self-awareness, foster connections, and promote change that cannot be duplicated within dyads (Drumm, 2016). Steinberg (2003) eloquently acknowledged a powerful force is created when group members align, creating a cohesive team, suggesting that “new worlds open up, like magic” (p. 38). (A. Normand, personal communication, May 2, 2018).
